4th Annual Planting
Imagine walking through the river valley and stumbling upon thousands of edible trees and shrubs. You’ve probably found Edmonton’s River Valley Food Forest.
On a South facing slope of Mackinnon ravine, lies Edmonton’s first publicly planted food forest; a self-sufficient edible ecosystem, that captures water, increases biodiversity, reduces maintenance costs, cleans the air, sequesters carbon, builds community, and (let’s not forget) grows food.
After three years of planting, the Edmonton food forest now contains thousands of edible, native trees and shrubs; saskatoons, high bush cranberries, low bush cranberries, currants, elderberries, pin cherries, chokecherries, beaked hazelnuts, and raspberries.
Join us on August 26th
The food forest is located along the mixed-use path of Mackinnon Ravine Park and can be accessed by foot from multiple directions. Click here for a detailed Google Map of the location and its access points.

A Celebration of the Harvest
Join the Edmonton Permaculture Guild and our amazing community as we celebrate this year’s harvest with delicious food and drink by the Yellowhead Brewery.
The highlights of the evening will be our special guests who will be talking to us about harvesting the bounty, canning, preserving and fermentation plus, the cool ways that you can actually extend the growing season well into the cooler months.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $15.00 at the door. Show us your Edmonton Permaculture Guild or Operation Fruit Rescue Membership and we will give you a $5 coupon which can be used towards any food or drink product at the Yellohead Brewery.
Since opening the doors we have been so fortunate to have the support of our community, and we want to show our gratitude by giving back in the best way we know how. Last year, with your help, we raised just over of $20000.00. Not bad, but this year, we want to crush that. So, again we have decided to donate 100% of ticket sales to YESS and set the fundraising goal for the evening to $30000.00. That’s right, every dime you pay (except GST, darn laws and such) will go directly to YESS. We can’t achieve this goal without the incredible generosity of some of our partners in business, which include CTV Edmonton, Southgate Audi, Alberta Pork, Irvings Farm Fresh, Baseline Wine & Spirits, Hesco, and Chic Boutique, and of course the generosity of you, our faithful diners.
This year, the evening will see the return of the whole roasted pig, thanks in large part to the kindness of Smokehouse BBQ for their pit. As a matter of fact, you’re more than welcome to stop by early, as we will be going whole hog right on the front lawn, from early in the morning to prepare the delectable beast. Weather permitting, the patio will be in full swing and the restaurant will be a buzz with delicious tray passed food items, and several swine inspired food stations, as well as tasty libations, provided by Baseline Wine & Spirits. The imcomparable DJ Hector Castro will be spinning his favourite Kevin Bacon tracks, and the silent auction will be sure to have some real gems.
Last, but never least, Chef Andrew Cowan, beloved chef and co-owner of Northern Chicken will be returning to compete in our annual Bacon Dessert Cook Off. With Chef Paul winning the best of seven series last year Andrew has something to prove. Be there to cast your vote for the winning dish.
Your ticket purchase will get you a seemingly endless amount of bacon inspired food, 10 drink tickets (with the average pour costing 3-5 tickets, more can be purchased) and one vote in the Bacon Dessert Cook Off.
It will be a fun-filled evening, with delicious food, great company, and an incredible cause. I sincerely hope you will join us to celebrate swine and reach our fundraising goal for YESS!
