Over 50% of newly purchased fashion is disposed of within a year. Black Friday shopping is well known to add to the already ballooning excess of clothing available. Redirecting how we buy while making use of what is already available is the best way to take back fashion.

Mod Uncorked and Life Preloved are teaming up with Goodwill Industries of Alberta, local B Corp company, Unbelts and global organization, Fashion Revolution to bring you a Black Friday alternative with a clothing swap, donation drive, conscious buying options and fashion sustainability education to keep resources in our own community as well as to make positive impacts to those who make our clothes.

Event: Swap Friday
Date: Friday, November 29
Time: 2pm-8pm
Location: King Edward Park Large Hall, 7708 – 85 Street
To Swap: Bring up to 10 of your best items to swap, take up to 15
To Donate: Unlimited amount of clothing to be donated to Goodwill
To Shop: Buy a new belt for your newly swapped jeans from local company, Unbelts
To Learn: Ask who made our clothes and learn why extending the lifecycle of our goods is a Fashion Revolution
Cost: $10 cash only at the door

Clothing Swap items to bring are 10 of your best items that you would like to see appreciated by someone else. These can be mens or womens (no kids items for this swap please), outerwear, casual, formal or business clothing, shoes and accessories in good reusable condition. No undergarments or sleepwear please. When you arrive, hand over your items to us, we’ll hang them up for others to browse through. Take home up to 15 items that have already arrived, new items will be arriving all throughout the day.

Goodwill is our sponsoring partner for this event, they will be on hand with a donation drive to take your excess items and share the programs and diversion commitments to keep clothing out of landfills. You can bring as many clothing donations as you would like for the donation drive.

Unbelts is a local B-Corp company, just featured on Dragon’s Den! You will be able to purchase an Unbelt through their Beltraiser campaign that gives a belt to a person in need during the Black Friday weekend. The company promotes an ethical supply chain made from recycled plastic bottles and providing fair wages in both Edmonton and Shanghai.

Fashion Revolution will be available to share knowledge in all the ways our clothes are sourced, produced and consumed, so that our clothing is made under safe, clean and fair resources. Fashion Revolution is a world wide organization started after the Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh. Every April, Fashion Revolution Week brings people and organizations together to ask the question, #whomademyclothes. We’d like to continue this conversation and action throughout the year.

We hope the collaboration of local business and organizations will inspire you to swap, don’t shop (and if you do shop, do so locally) this Black Friday.
