The Great #YEG BBQ Roundup – Memphis Blues

The Great #YEG BBQ Roundup – Memphis Blues

In January of 1999, George Siu and Park Hffelfinger of Vancouver food scene fame, had a stopover in Memphis while flying home from New Orleans. Lunch was a pulled pork sandwich, and it was love at first bite.

Since then they have attended BBQ competitions and done their research. They were able to reproduce the recipes at home, and decided to bring authentic Southern BBQ to Canada.

RT Sharing is Caring!

RT Sharing is Caring!

Ronald McDonald House has been a part of the Edmonton community since 1985.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® Northern Alberta is a home away from home for families with seriously ill or injured children. Our 32 family suites provide a comforting place to stay during treatment, but we are more than just a roof over our families’ heads. We provide programs and services to help families resume a normal life as much as possible. Read more about the families we serve.

Meals that Mend

Through our Meals that Mend program, we provide families with comforting and nutritious meals when they need it most. This is a volunteer-led program that works to provide breakfast, lunch and dinner to families staying at the House and even deliver lunch to the hospital when families can’t leave their child’s bedside.

The Red Shoe Crawl is an annual fundraising event held on Whyte Avenue where you are treated to several culinary samples from different shops and restaurants along the ave.  It’s a great way to enjoy local and support a wonderful charity that helps to keep families together.

What do you need to do?  Get on that Twitter account and re-tweet for a chance to win!  I have two sets of two tickets that just might be yours!  Get on that social media and get the word out there.  Help families heal!

Made from Scratch; The Downtown Diner

Made from Scratch; The Downtown Diner

The Downtown Diner in Fort Saskatchewan was enthusiastically recommended to me by friends when they found out that I was a food blogger. I had mentioned that one of my favorite finds, the Redline Diner had closed its doors for business.

I grew up in the era where it was still possible to pull up to the Drive In restaurant and have your server come out on roller skates to take your order. When your food came, it was on a tray that clipped to your window glass. The burgers were always a tasty treat and the root beer so frosty and delicious. Those were the days!

Cravings; Gelato Love Launch

Cravings; Gelato Love Launch

Cravings is a family affair, with the lovely Charlynn Odegard heading the project. It all started with a family trip to Italy where they fell in love with Gelato.

Charlynn lovingly hand makes each batch in her home studio.  All the ingredients are fresh and as much as possible, locally sourced.  Cravings could be found at festivals, farmer’s markets and sometimes a special event.

Cravings would like to expand into offering a “Gelato Bar” for your next garden party, wedding, anniversary, fundraiser or other special event.

The Dog – Man’s Best Friend

The Dog – Man’s Best Friend

Edmonton’s newest gourmet hotdog and sausage restaurant is The Dog; located at 9567A 118 Avenue.

This is a Sister restaurant to Sloppy Hoggs and Absolutely Edibles, in the Absolutely Edibles old space.  It has been open for about 6 weeks now.

The decor reminded me a bit of an old style diner or ice cream shop with Original 16 on tap.

The menu is pretty fantastic. There are some creative appies (Puppy Nuts) and some really great poutine like items called “The Dogs Breakfast”.

Denizen Hall – Play With Your Food!

Denizen Hall – Play With Your Food!

Denizen Hall is located in one of the very few heritage buildings that Edmonton has left standing at the corner of 103 avenue and 103 street.  Formerly the Richelieu Pub, it has been open since 1904 and provided live music, kegs and whiskey bottles to the growing and newly incorporated City of Edmonton.

When I used to live in a different city and travel to Edmonton on the Greyhound bus as a teenager, this place scared the crap out of me, not going to lie! It took me a while to be able to convince my Husband that we should really go and visit because I have heard a lot of good things about this space.  I am sure I mentioned the word “Arcade” but apparently he didn’t hear that part!

The Grand Hotel has been completely re-vamped and is now home to “Denizen Hall” and is again providing live music, kegs and classic arcade and pinball machines to the people of Edmonton.

Native Delights; Brand New Restaurant Aboriginal Cuisine

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, there was a man with a dream… A dream to make Bannock, not war! Fast forward to three years into the future, and this young man is well on the way with the opening of his new restaurant.

I have had the distinct pleasure of indulging in Native Delights food on several previous occasions.  My tastebuds thank me every time.  This visit was no exception.  Bannock is in my blood.

Native Delights has taken over the old “Sloppy Hoggs” location just East of NAIT campus.  They didn’t change the decor much, but it really works. It is cozy and inviting.

Coldest Night of The Year 2015 for Hope Mission

Coldest Night of The Year 2015 for Hope Mission

Food is my passion.  I didn’t always have this passion, my palate was very un-educated until I started dating someone that showed me the finer things in life.

I grew up in a family of five.  I was lucky we always had food on the table.  I know my parents struggled sometimes.  I can’t even imagine the fear of not knowing where your next meal is coming from and whether or not you are going to be able to feed your children.

When I was in high school, I was very passionate about helping.  I wanted to grow up to be a Social Worker someday.  Thankfully my guidance counselor, Mr. Prosk, was blunt and honest.  He begged me not to go ahead with that career path.  He said that I was too soft-hearted and would end up bringing stray people home all of the time, burning out in a very short time.

I never sat on any boards for any of the charities that I volunteered for.  I wanted to just be in the front lines helping people.  I was recognized a couple of times for my efforts (YR Radio Citizen of the Month) and had some nice pieces of paper to put in my keepsake book.

Happy Halloween; Welcome to Deadmonton House!

Happy Halloween; Welcome to Deadmonton House!

Happy Halloween!

From the creative mind of Edmonton Firefighter, Ryan Kozak please welcome the Williams family to Deadmonton House!

Ryan is a man with a vision that quietly snuck up on Edmonton to give us one of the most detailed, frightening haunts that Edmonton has ever seen!  He had been working on the haunt since February to be launched for the entire month of October.  Deadmonton House is an artful balance of static props, animatronics and live actors.   Deadmonton House’s ultimate goal is to chill you and thrill you.  They want you to have a frighteningly fun time!

The Williams family are a bunch of pumpkin farmers that came upon some really hard luck.  Flooding caused them to lose their crops and start the descent into madness.  Open doors and apple pie became whispered rumours of people going out to visit the farm and never returning.

Deadmonton House invites you to the Williams family farm.  You get to stroll through the grounds and the house, meeting some of the family members along the way.  Even the most steel-nerved people will get a thrill walking through this haunt!

I have worked many haunts since moving here to Edmonton.  It is one of my favourite ways to celebrate the season; volunteering.  There are some very talented “Halloweenies” in and around the Edmonton area and I thought I knew them all until Ryan walked on to the scene.  He started giving us teaser photos of some of the props on social media which immediately caught my attention. They were so detailed and “real” looking.   I decided to sign up for the volunteer orientation to see what Edmonton would be dealing with for this Halloween season.

The haunt walk-thru had me hooked instantly.  I was in love!  THIS was where I would be volunteering for the season.  I have such admiration for the countless hours of work that I know went into each room in the haunt.  Ryan is a bit of a perfectionist and it was the tiny details throughout the haunt that got my attention.

Edmonton has taken notice of Ryan’s talent as well.  The lineups around the haunt have been epic!  Is it worth the wait?  The Facebook reviews say; yes it is!

Tips for a Successful Visit to Deadmonton House:

  • Come early!  There can be up to a two hour wait.
  • Bring cash or pre-purchase your tickets online.
  • There is a food truck, bring cash if you think you might get hungry.
  • Dress for the weather.  Due to the long lineups, they cannot fit everyone inside the building to wait.
  • No pictures please!  Please do not ruin the scares for other patrons.
  • Please do not touch the actors.  We are all volunteers and work hard for you to enjoy the haunt.  We have been pushed, punched and kicked.  Please be respectful!
  • Please keep moving through the haunt.  When you stop, it bunches people up and then ruins the scares for other patrons.
  • It’s fun to have a couple of drinks before going in to the haunt, but it isn’t fun for the volunteers when you are drunk, belligerent and rude! Please drink responsibly.
  • Please remember to check in and rate us on Facebook and Yelp.  The volunteers love to hear your feedback, positive and negative.  We just want you to be terrified and have a great time!

Deadmonton House is open Halloween Night as well as November 1st and a special “Flashlights Only” event on November 2nd.  There are still three nights to get your scare on at this fantastic Edmonton haunt.
