– Fairmont Tastemakers from around the world combine talent and technique to create new level of excellence in hotel cocktail creation globally

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts is inviting guests to taste what happens when elite mixologists from around the world come together to craft cocktails.

Classics. Perfected., Fairmont’s new global cocktail menu, is just what it sounds like, a selection of beautifully balanced and delicious cocktails created by newly appointed Fairmont Tastemakers.

“When people “meet for a drink” at one of our hotels – from The American Bar at The Savoy to The Plaza in New York – they expect the crispest gin and tonic and a truly perfect manhattan. With this new menu that is precisely what they will get – along with quality ice and bartender’s advice when appropriate,” said Jane Mackie, vice president, Fairmont Brand. “The Classics. Perfected., menu was curated by our top bartenders who were charged with helping us to discover and perfect the best old and new classics.”

“This is much bigger than a new menu,” continued Mackie. “It is about shaping and sharing Fairmont cocktail culture with our neighbors and visiting guests in over 20 countries.”

Fairmont’s bars around the world have historically been places were deals were struck and history was made, showing that cocktail culture is about more than just drinks. The bartenders who have presided over these storied bars have been shaping cocktail trends for over a century. Bringing together Fairmont’s best mixologists to collaborate and share their expertise, has unearthed a new level of quality and craftsmanship.

Selected for their individual talent and mastery of cocktail methodology, the Fairmont Tastemakers for the two-year program include – Grant Sceney from Fairmont Pacific Rim, Nader Chabaane from Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, Erik Lorincz from The Savoy, A Fairmont Managed Hotel and Tom Hogan from Fairmont Singapore.

Cocktail innovations in hotels have typically been the work of visionary bartenders working on individual specialties for guests’ sipping pleasure. This is the first time that Fairmont has hand selected top bartenders from around the world to create cocktails together. The new creations were developed in partnership with Kathy Casey at her Liquid Kitchen Food Studios in June 2015.

The menu features three sections: the most requested classics that guests know and love, revived classics to entice cocktail enthusiasts and the “neats” for those who wish to savor the richness of the program’s carefully selected spirit partners.

“We are incredibly proud of the group of partners involved in Fairmont’s new cocktail program,” said Alexandra Blum, VP, public relations and partnerships, FRHI Hotels & Resorts. “Each brand was hand selected for its outstanding quality and global appeal. We are so pleased to see that this careful curation in partnership with our hand selected Fairmont Tastemakers, has resulted in a world-class offering for both our trend setting and discerning.”

Global spirits included in the program, chosen for their quality and craftsmanship, include: Remy Martin VSOP Fine Champagne Cognac, Belvedere Vodka, Veuve Clicquot Brut Yellow Label, The Botanist Islay Dry Gin, Bombay Sapphire, Gentleman Jack Rare Tennessee Whiskey, Woodford Reserve Distillers Select, Cointreau, Mount Gay Rum, Casamigos Tequila and Louis XIII.

Cocktails will be served in beautifully crafted Schott Zwiesel crystal glassware, distributed by global partner Fortessa, to further elevate this special offering.

Classics. Perfected., will be available at all Fairmont Hotels & Resorts in the Americas starting on November 23. The menu will be rolled out globally over the holiday season.

Privada Welcomes Back Chef Tony Krause

Privada Welcomes Back Chef Tony Krause

I have had the distinct pleasure of being able to sample Chef Tony Krause’s food several times now.  I must say, I am a fan.

Chef Tony was at Privada in St. Albert.  He went on some adventures to further his culinary skills, including some foraging in BC.  He came back to Edmonton to open his own restaurant, “The Salt Room”, which unfortunately did not come to fruition as Mother’s Market ended up closing due to unforeseen circumstances with the building.  That didn’t stop Chef Tony!

Chef went back to Privada and met with the owners, and is now back at Privada with a new menu!

Privada has always been focused on in-house charcuterie.  Chef Tony has an incredible talent of pairing flavors to make the ultimate taste experience.  Privada also focuses on locally produced food, and as much as possible is made in house.  You will see some of the preserves displayed on the shelves and charcuterie curing in plain view. Chef Tony also adds foraged food to the repertoire with things like Untamed Feast wild mushrooms.

Kaylen was lovely enough to invite me to sample the tasting menu at Privada.  I had just been a few weeks previously for a special pop up dinner for my second wedding anniversary, which we enjoyed every second of!  I was excited to see what would be on the new menu with Chef Tony at the helm.  Privada and Chef Tony never disappoint!

The tasting menu is a 5 course affair that will cost you $60.  It is only available Wednesday and Thursday.  Make time for a date night, I highly recommend it!  I ended up switching tables in the middle of my dinner to join some other friends and unfortunately I missed out on a course which was Corn Succotash Pasta.

What I was able to sample was obviously made with passion.  Each dish attractively plated; the pork fritter was served on a heated rock that Chef foraged from a river himself.  How cool is that?

Scallops are a hard dish to impress this BC girl with, but Privada did not disappoint.  They were cooked perfectly and the shaved truffle was delightful.  Chef Tony has worked with Oceanwise so he is aware of seafood sustainability which was also nice to hear.

Kaylen and Kaylan are wonderful hosts.  If you have ever wanted to learn more about wine, this is the place to go.  Kaylan was kind enough to show off the Coravin Argon system which basically lets you sample the wine from the bottle without actually opening it.  Pretty neat stuff!  Privada will be able to provide you with a glass of wine versus the entire bottle which is great in the books of this light weight drinker.

Coldest Night of The Year 2015 for Hope Mission

Coldest Night of The Year 2015 for Hope Mission

Food is my passion.  I didn’t always have this passion, my palate was very un-educated until I started dating someone that showed me the finer things in life.

I grew up in a family of five.  I was lucky we always had food on the table.  I know my parents struggled sometimes.  I can’t even imagine the fear of not knowing where your next meal is coming from and whether or not you are going to be able to feed your children.

When I was in high school, I was very passionate about helping.  I wanted to grow up to be a Social Worker someday.  Thankfully my guidance counselor, Mr. Prosk, was blunt and honest.  He begged me not to go ahead with that career path.  He said that I was too soft-hearted and would end up bringing stray people home all of the time, burning out in a very short time.

I never sat on any boards for any of the charities that I volunteered for.  I wanted to just be in the front lines helping people.  I was recognized a couple of times for my efforts (YR Radio Citizen of the Month) and had some nice pieces of paper to put in my keepsake book.

Happy Halloween; Welcome to Deadmonton House!

Happy Halloween; Welcome to Deadmonton House!

Happy Halloween!

From the creative mind of Edmonton Firefighter, Ryan Kozak please welcome the Williams family to Deadmonton House!

Ryan is a man with a vision that quietly snuck up on Edmonton to give us one of the most detailed, frightening haunts that Edmonton has ever seen!  He had been working on the haunt since February to be launched for the entire month of October.  Deadmonton House is an artful balance of static props, animatronics and live actors.   Deadmonton House’s ultimate goal is to chill you and thrill you.  They want you to have a frighteningly fun time!

The Williams family are a bunch of pumpkin farmers that came upon some really hard luck.  Flooding caused them to lose their crops and start the descent into madness.  Open doors and apple pie became whispered rumours of people going out to visit the farm and never returning.

Deadmonton House invites you to the Williams family farm.  You get to stroll through the grounds and the house, meeting some of the family members along the way.  Even the most steel-nerved people will get a thrill walking through this haunt!

I have worked many haunts since moving here to Edmonton.  It is one of my favourite ways to celebrate the season; volunteering.  There are some very talented “Halloweenies” in and around the Edmonton area and I thought I knew them all until Ryan walked on to the scene.  He started giving us teaser photos of some of the props on social media which immediately caught my attention. They were so detailed and “real” looking.   I decided to sign up for the volunteer orientation to see what Edmonton would be dealing with for this Halloween season.

The haunt walk-thru had me hooked instantly.  I was in love!  THIS was where I would be volunteering for the season.  I have such admiration for the countless hours of work that I know went into each room in the haunt.  Ryan is a bit of a perfectionist and it was the tiny details throughout the haunt that got my attention.

Edmonton has taken notice of Ryan’s talent as well.  The lineups around the haunt have been epic!  Is it worth the wait?  The Facebook reviews say; yes it is!

Tips for a Successful Visit to Deadmonton House:

  • Come early!  There can be up to a two hour wait.
  • Bring cash or pre-purchase your tickets online.
  • There is a food truck, bring cash if you think you might get hungry.
  • Dress for the weather.  Due to the long lineups, they cannot fit everyone inside the building to wait.
  • No pictures please!  Please do not ruin the scares for other patrons.
  • Please do not touch the actors.  We are all volunteers and work hard for you to enjoy the haunt.  We have been pushed, punched and kicked.  Please be respectful!
  • Please keep moving through the haunt.  When you stop, it bunches people up and then ruins the scares for other patrons.
  • It’s fun to have a couple of drinks before going in to the haunt, but it isn’t fun for the volunteers when you are drunk, belligerent and rude! Please drink responsibly.
  • Please remember to check in and rate us on Facebook and Yelp.  The volunteers love to hear your feedback, positive and negative.  We just want you to be terrified and have a great time!

Deadmonton House is open Halloween Night as well as November 1st and a special “Flashlights Only” event on November 2nd.  There are still three nights to get your scare on at this fantastic Edmonton haunt.

Savour Strathcona Coming July 6th

Do you like “Taste of Edmonton”? Then get your tickets for “Savour Strathcona“!

Originally when I heard about this event, I thought of Old Strathcona. This is actually in Sherwood Park.

Like “Taste of Edmonton”, you purchase tickets to taste your food items. They will generally cost you 3 to 5 tickets each.

Savour Strathcona County will be back this summer to delight arts, culinary and culture enthusiasts.

Now in its third year, Savour Strathcona County is a celebration of local cuisine, arts and heritage. The event brings together chefs from local, independent restaurants, creating culinary dishes from fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

“Savour Strathcona County is a wonderful way for the community to show their support for our local artists and restaurants, while spending an enjoyable Sunday afternoon at the Community Centre with family and friends,” says Mayor Roxanne Carr.

New activities are planned for 2014:

  • Food trucks will join the numerous local artists and restaurants setting up on the east plaza.
  • Free cooking demonstrations will be held in the Agora.
  • Unique family and heritage activities will be provided by the Strathcona County library.

Savour Strathcona County is an opportunity for local restaurants to showcase unique dishes,” says Gerry Gabinet, Director of Economic Development and Tourism. “The popularity of the event has grown, and we are pleased that food trucks are joining the event.”

Admission is free for all activities on-site. Taste tickets cost $5 for a set of five. Artwork will also be available for sale.

The event will be held in the Community Centre (Agora) from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 6.

Stages Kitchen – Big Business Supporting Local

Stages Kitchen – Big Business Supporting Local

Recently, a group of local bloggers and media were invited to a tasting event put on by the brand new “Stages Kitchen and Bar” which is being run by the Silver Birch Hotels Management Group.  This is the former “Mayfield Hotel”.   The Mayfield Dinner Theatre has been an Edmonton staple since 1975 and thankfully will remain the “Mayfield Dinner Theatre”.  Stages of course was named and themed to be a partner to the already established dinner theatre.

Silver Birch has done a BEAUTIFUL job of renovating the aging building.  They tried to use natural light wherever possible and modern conveniences are everywhere.
