Fairmont Hotel Macdonald – The New Festive Menu

Fairmont Hotel Macdonald – The New Festive Menu

The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald has been an Edmonton landmark since 1915.  Lovingly referred to as “The Mac”, the Hotel Macdonald has been a statement of luxury and a host to royalty, political leaders and entertainers alike.  The Mac is rich in history and one of the very few places in Edmonton to have a “High Tea” experience.

I was delighted to hear that The Mac has brought Edmonton’s very first canine ambassador – “Smudge”.  Smudge was in training to be a guide dog for the blind, but was deemed to be too anxious and distracted to continue in the program.  Smudge then started her hospitality career.  She has been a canine ambassador for the Algonquin in New Brunswick and the St. Andrews in Scotland.  When I was invited to the “Mac Festive” event, I was really looking forward to meeting Smudge!

Mission Accomplished:

Canine Ambassador, Smudge

Smudge was warm and welcoming with a wagging tail for all!

The staff at The Mac is just as warm and welcoming as Smudge.  You are always made to feel at home when you visit The Mac.  Our event was held in the Confederation Lounge with live music and a crackling fireplace. There was a lovely variety of refreshments offered, but the Pomegranate Poinsettia was so pretty to look at that I couldn’t resist.

Pomegranate Poinsettia

This was made for me by the bartender and she described all of the ingredients that went into it. Pomegranate juice, vodka and a splash of sparkling white wine. This was garnished with cranberries, a slice of lime and fresh mint. It was very festive and refreshing.

Chef Serge Jost was at the Mac Festive event to greet all of the participants and offer them a very tasty lobster bisque with cognac creme .  He expressed that he liked to meet all of the media at these events.  It was nice to be able to chat with Chef Jost, it gave the experience a more personal touch.  He has been with The Mac since the end of August.  Welcome to Edmonton Chef Jost, it was lovely to meet you!

I was lucky enough to have my two wonderful dining companions; Linda and Teresa.  We are most familiar in the Twitterverse and it is always a pleasure to spend time with them.  My first tasting plate was the Foie Gras Torchon.

Foie Gras Torchon
Beautiful presentation!  This was a great mixture of textures and flavours.  The Foie Gras had a silky mouth feel and was my favourite from the evening.

Next up was the Crab Cake Slider.  This was served with a miso, fennel slaw and sriracha ketchup.

Crab Cake Slider

The crab was tender and the coating crispy.  The sriracha ketchup gave it a slight kick.

Enochi Mushroom

Pictured above is Enochi served with spiced squash puree and crispy sage.  Again, a lovely marriage of textures and flavours.

Steelhead Trout

Above is the house-cured Steelhead Trout served on a Quinoa Bellini.   I am a huge salmon fan.  This was a nice change in flavour.

Venison Carpaccio

I was lucky growing up to be very acquainted with the flavours of wild meat.  However, I did not learn how to cook it properly until well into adulthood.  Besides the beautiful presentation, the meat was moist and flavourful.

Dessert Platter

And to finish the evening off, a selection of desserts.  Here we have from left to right the Cherry Shortbread, the Ice Wine Gelee and Candy Cane Fudge.  My favourite was the Ice Wine Gelee.

Egg Nog Creme Brulee

Crème Brulee and Panna Cotta are two quick ways to my heart. The Crème Brulee above was Eggnog served with a gingerbread madeleine.  This dessert was absolutely breathtaking!  Perfect texture and the eggnog flavour married to the gingerbread madeleine – a marriage made in heaven!

If you would like to experience a truly wonderful culinary experience with your family or your loved ones, the Hotel Macdonald is always a sure bet!  The service is top notch and always welcoming.  The environment is comfortable and luxurious.  Chef Jost and his team are creative and try to locally source ingredients wherever possible.  His French influence adds delicious twists to the food that is presented on all of the menus.

The Mac has many different festive holiday options available.  Please visit their website for more information.

Many thanks to The Mac and their team for another wonderful tasting experience!

The History of Rock n’ Roll: Stars and Stripes

The History of Rock n’ Roll: Stars and Stripes

As my nickname suggests, I am all about the food.   When I was invited to this event at the Mayfield Dinner Theatre I was excited to try out the food as the hotel has been purchased by Hilton.  The food that has been provided in the past for the countless meetings and tradeshows I have attended has always been beautifully presented.  I felt just like a kid at Christmas, waiting.

The rest of the hotel is under construction/renovation but the dinner theatre corner has been kept intact and is still open for business.  Immediately appreciated is parking located right outside the venue.  There was an awful storm brewing that night.

The way that the Mayfield does dinner theatre is buffet style.  They have dinner from 6pm to 8pm and then the entertainment starting promptly after dinner.   I like this format.  It gives you time to really enjoy your food and some conversation before the show starts.

The seating arrangements were very nicely done.  There were just the two of us seated at our very own table.  That is not the case with the competition.  It was nice to be able to have a more intimate setting and conversation with my bestie. It just makes the evening that much more pleasant.

The table setting was very formal.  Stemware, utensils, plates and linen napkins all arranged artfully on the table.

The buffet is located in a different hall attached to the theatre.  This keeps the noise and the activity away from the theatre.  The hall that the buffet was located in was very warm.  This made some of the items that were supposed to be served cold, rather warm.

Mayfield Dinner Theatre Dessert Station
Mayfield Dinner Theatre Dessert Station

As you can see from the photo above, the presentation is beautiful as always.  Everything was labelled as to what it was.

My dining companion does have a severe allergy to mushrooms.  If you give the kitchen enough notice, they will be able to specially prepare a meal for the person with the allergy.  My guest did go and look at the website to make sure that she would have no issues.  Kudos to the staff for being forward thinking enough to do this for people.

Mayfield Dinner Theatre Salads Plate

This was a lovely way to start off dinner. Cold smoked salmon, fresh mussels, boccaccini and pickled beet and feta salad.

As I had mentioned before the temperature in the banquet room was very warm.  This transferred to the salmon.  It was still very tasty but “limp”.  The mussels were tender and fresh.  The pickled beet salad was my favourite; a great mix of flavours, tasty and zingy.

Mayfield Dinner Theatre Prime Rig

The Mayfield Dinner Theatre Buffet offers Prime Rib with au jus and Yorkshire Puddings.  As you can see, I like mine rare.  The Prime Rib was fantastic and the Rosemary au jus was a great partner.

Now on to my favourite part of the meal – dessert!

Mayfield Dinner Theatre Saskatoon Berry Bread Pudding

This was Saskatoon Berry Bread pudding with Grand Marnier Custard. It looked very pretty. I was disappointed with this one. The custard was very bland and I could not taste the Grand Marnier.

Mayfield Dinner Theatre Pumpkin Spice Mousse

This lovely is Pumpkin Spice Mousse.  It is not nearly as large as it appears.  It is served in a shot glass and garnished with a gooseberry.  I really loved this, but I like anything to do with pumpkin, and love all of the spices that go into pumpkin pie.  My dinner companion said that it had a little too much spice for her liking, but I quite enjoyed it.

Mayfield Dinner Theatre Espresso Panna Cotta

This was my superstar of the night,  Espresso Panna Cotta.  Beautiful, creamy texture, lovely hint of espresso flavour.  Again though, the heat in the banquet room caused the Panna Cotta to be a little on the runny side.

Overall, the meal was a very enjoyable experience.  There were a lot more food choices than what I have presented here.  All of the presentation was absolutely beautiful in the banquet room.  (My plating skills are obviously very lacking!)  The two hour window to enjoy the meal is also a huge plus.

THE SHOW

The History of Rock n’ Roll; Stars and Stripes.   In a nutshell, the entertainment is going through the American history of Rock n’ Roll, starting from its roots.  You have a wonderful narrator that gives you a running history lesson, heavy on the entertainment!

The music is all done by a live band.  The musicians and actors/singers are very talented; lots of energy and great voices.  These folks did a great character study.  The Rock n’ Roll legends that they are portraying on stage were spot on.  Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis had the body language down perfectly; Elvis was suave and kissing the backs of hands, charming all the ladies.

The evening was filled with really great music and performances.  The audience was swaying to the music and often clapping along.  The cavemen were a great opening number, you will love them!

My favourite part of the evening was when they got to some obscure references of 50’s music and one of my all time favourite artists – Screamin’ Jay Hawkins.  Again, the very talented actor did a very good impression of Jay.  Usually when his name is mentioned, I get blank stares.  His songs are hilarious fun.

If you love the music from the fifties and sixties then you really need to go and see this show.  Tickets would be the best Christmas present for a music lover in your life!  Want a great date night?  Check out this show!

Come for the food, stay for the show!

Soda Jerks – Anything But Jerks

Soda Jerks – Anything But Jerks

Soda Jerks was one of the first places in Edmonton to bring about the “Build Your Own Burger”. You can always have your burger the way YOU like it. Many, many, many choices! The ingredients are all top quality.

The name for me brought about visions of a “Soda Jerk” behind a chrome counter with an ice cream freezer and a pile of milkshake blenders. You won’t find an actual Soda Jerk here. The decor has lots of bottles of soda everywhere and comfy booths and seating throughout the restaurant. They also have a secondary location in St. Albert now that has a more open concept than the original restaurant.

Among the sides are the best deep fried pickles in the city. Hand breaded in tempura, they are always crispy and juicy at the same time.

As the name suggests, soda is what makes the Jerks go ’round! There are 45 different flavours of sodas. They also offer floats and milkshakes; non-alcoholic and the adult variety! My favourite is the Guinness float. I had to try it because I just couldn’t imagine ice cream and beer but it is phenomenal! I even bought one for my hard core Guinness drinking friend Ben, and he loved it!

The Barn Yard, The Big Jerk and the Doris, are three really BIG burgers. There is a contest to eat all three of them. One of my friends was able to eat Doris and got a t-shirt for his efforts.

If you are going to the restaurant during a peak time, expect a 45 minute to an hour wait. At the original restaurant in West Edmonton, you can go to the lounge to grab a drink while you wait. The menu is online so you can peruse before you go!

The Nest – Nait’s Hidden Gem

The Nest – Nait’s Hidden Gem

So NAIT has one of the best culinary programs and that means that the resto-bar should be fabulous right?  Right!

It is your typical gastro-pub setup and decor.  Newly renovated.  Very cozy, with some pool tables and dart boards.  Your menus are already at the table and you seat yourself.

I am a huge beer fanatic and along with some local micro-breweries (Alley Kat) they had one of my favourites on tap which is a Belgian White that pairs well with just about anything, Shock Top.

The menu is imaginative and innovative.  I had the Crawfish Corndog which was shrimp and crawfish sausage in a sweet corn batter served with fiery mustard dip.   I had a side of soup (potato bacon chowder).  Very tasty!

The only drawback to going to The Nest on a regular basis is that there is no free parking.  What you pay will vary on the time of day that you are at the restaurant.

Shogun Japanese Restaurant – Dinner with Entertainment

Shogun Japanese Restaurant – Dinner with Entertainment

This is a restaurant that a dear friend is a huge fan of due to the Teppanyaki chef and the fire show.  He loves to come here for his birthday dinner annually.  Unfortunately, that is the only time I go.

I LOVE sushi and Asian cuisine in general – but the food here is “meh” at best.  It is edible, but I find it expensive for what you are actually getting on your plate.  It is never crowded even during what should be a peak dinner time.

The chef that does the show is always wonderful.  We have managed to get the same fellow three times running now.  He is funny, entertaining and seems to really know his way around the grill.  His show is the reason we keep going back.

Shogun has been around for forever and is in desperate need of a renovation.  Even a fresh coat of paint in the restrooms would be a nice touch.

Vi’s for Pies – Not Just Desserts!

Vi’s for Pies – Not Just Desserts!

This is a hidden gem for Edmonton.  Period.

Vi’s is one of our favourites for date night.  It is small and relatively intimate.  There is a beautiful patio for when weather permits and a fireplace inside for winter.

The daily menu is brought to your table as a chalkboard on an easel.  They generally have a selection of comfort food all year round, and barbeque in the summer months.

We have never been disappointed with the soups.  They are always flavourful and hit the spot every time. They always use really good ingredients for everything on the menu.  You will never leave hungry!

Vi’s, as the name suggests, is famous for the desserts.  The selection is always different.  Cheesecakes, tortes, pies, squares etc.  There hasn’t been anything that we have tried yet that we haven’t enjoyed.

They also sell the cakes etc whole to take home, but I suggest you call ahead, as you never know what will be in the case.

Mr. Mike’s – Tastes of Childhood

Mr. Mike’s – Tastes of Childhood

For anyone that was born on the West Coast in around the 70’s… Mr. Mikes has been a staple.  I have been going to this franchise since I was knee-high to a grasshopper.  (Many, many years!)  The format that they used to have was a buffet style.  You used to go up to the buffet to get your salads and sides as your steak was being grilled behind the scenes, to your specifications.

Times have changed.  Mr. Mike’s has gotten with the times and the experience is now a sit down one.  This particular location is in West Edmonton Mall’s “Bourbon Street”.  There is a mixture of booths and tables.  The decor is of the coast and Haida people.  The atmosphere is a little on the loud side as the restaurant is open to Bourbon Street.

We have never had to wait too long for a table, even with the restaurant location.  The staff seems to be efficient at getting people seated quickly.

I mainly go to Mr. Mike’s for the nostalgia, it brings back a lot of great childhood memories.  As an adult now – the food is pretty decent.  You can get a great steak dinner at the going rate, and the service is usually good.

Mr. Mikes has always been a family affair.  There are crayons for the kids and a children’s menu.

So if you have to brave the mall and you just can’t do the food court one more time – try Mr. Mike’s!  You just might like it!

23rd Annual Chili Cook Off – River City Roundup

23rd Annual Chili Cook Off – River City Roundup

When I worked downtown, I would always make sure I had the afternoon off to attend the RCR Annual Chili Cook Off. The shear creativity and flavour that go into some of the creations that you can sample were simply mind-boggling. You go and purchase your bowls, pick the ones that you would like to sample and enjoy! You could even vote for your favourite.

This year I get to do things a little differently… Sadly, I don’t work downtown any longer.  I do have the best boss around at my new day job, and she gave me the go ahead to take the afternoon off to be a special blogger guest at this year’s cook off!  <Insert Happy Dance Here>

This year the event will take place in Churchill square underneath the big tops. The event will take place from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm on Friday, November 1st. This year there are 19 contestants:

Now if some of those names don’t get you excited to try this culinary experience, you may not be a foodie!

There are four different categories that we will be basing our tasting opinions on.

  • Best Locally Grown Chili – This award is given to the highest scoring chili cooked with locally grown ingredients.  Fifty percent of the ingredients MUST be produced in Alberta.
  • Best Vegan/Vegetarian Chili – This award is presented to the highest scoring chili cooked with only vegan or vegetarian ingredients.
  • Best Overall Chili – The highest scoring chili takes home this trophy.
  • Best Booth Decor – This award is given to the competitor who has the most creative decor, unique names and best crowd engagement.  Judges will select their top three and the booth with the most points will win.

Social media of course is an important aspect of any blogger’s assignment.  I would love to hear your opinions if you can join us for the competition.  The Twitter hashtag for the event is #rcr13.  My Twitter handle is @yegfoodie – let me know what you think about your samples!

**From Yelp.ca:

Edmonton and Area Halloween Haunts

Edmonton and Area Halloween Haunts

There is one thing that I am more passionate about than food, and that would be Halloween!  I have either put on my own haunt or been a live actor in someone else’s.   In fact, that is how my wonderful husband and I first met; we were both live actors in a haunt to raise money for the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

We have been hoping for an indoor haunt for a few years now.  We almost had it but it unfortunately fell through.  I am sure we will be able to finally get it up and running next year.

PROFESSIONAL HAUNTS

It was a slow year for us this year as our plans were cancelled, but we were able to make a guest appearance at the ZED Haunted House in Red Deer for their Midnight Madness.  ZED has been going for many years now.  All of the proceeds go to the Red Deer Boys and Girls Club.  This is NOT your average haunt, it is professionally run and combines animatronics with live actors.  They rely on their team of dedicated volunteers to staff and scare the patrons.  I HIGHLY recommend the trip out to Red Deer – it will not disappoint!

Please find more information on their website: ZED Haunted House

“Catch The Keys Productions”  is another that looks like it will be fun.  They are haunting the floors above Block 1912 cafe on Whyte Avenue in a unique “immersive theatre experience” presented as “Dead Centre of Town”.  It is part theatre, part history lesson.  The shows run at 8pm and 9pm.  Tickets are available at yeglive.ca Don’t forget to head down to Block 1912 for some creepy cupcake goodness made by my lovely friend Amy!

For more information, please see the Journal article here:  Dead Centre of Town

COMMUNITY HAUNTS

If you are a fan of Candy Cane Lane, then you will appreciate Haunted Alley.  This is a group of private homes that have all pooled together and decorated their homes in spooky Halloween fashion.  These folks are accepting donations for the Edmonton Foodbank.

Haunted Alley is located in the Grovenor Community at 104 Avenue & 148 Street.  Open until 9pm.

Jasper Park Community League is putting on a Halloween Haunted House this year as well.  Admission is free with a Food Bank donation. Warning – this is a graphic event.

“If you’re wondering if your children are too young … they are!”

Jasper Place Community League 8751-153 Street.  Open from 6pm to 8pm.

PRIVATE HAUNTS

The Plunkie family haunts their garage annually.  An excellent stop on your trick or treating journey!
2706 124 Street in Edmonton.

The McDonald family has downsized this year, they normally do a back yard walk through haunt.  I highly recommend putting this address on your trick or treating map, Grants props are all handmade and they are simply AMAZING!  Accepting donations for the Edmonton Food Bank.
57 Henry Avenue in Edmonton.

The Tobin family has been doing garage haunts for a couple of years now.  They used to be the driving force behind “The Tour of Terror” where my husband and I met.  I helped them set up this year – great candy and a mix of live actors and props.
11241 167A Avenue in Edmonton

The Carli family’s haunt is always phenomenal.  They have thousands of guests sign the guest book yearly.  We worked this haunt as live actors last year.  They are accepting donations for the St. Albert Food Bank.
64 Embassy Place in St. Albert

The “Ward of Terror” is located in Stony Plain.  It is a garage haunt that has been lovingly put together to scare you to death.
31 Willowbend Court in Stony Plain

And last, but not least, the Pettigrew family haunt.  This is the one that I will be working at this year.   The RCMP has graciously agreed to shut down the street.  Rigor Productions will be on site and will be dancing every half hour.   The haunt opens at 5:30pm.  We are accepting donations for the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
29 Michagan Street in Devon

There is so much to see and do in and around Edmonton on Halloween.  Be safe and enjoy some good scares!

Kaiten Sushi Experience – Japonais Bistro

Kaiten Sushi Experience – Japonais Bistro

It was lovely to be invited to this event.  Sushi is my favourite thing in the world of food.

There was a Japanese fusion tapas restaurant that was located in Oliver Square, here in Edmonton several years ago.  That used to be the highlight of my week was to go for their incredible martinis and the tapas.  The “small plates” give you the option to have several taste experiences in one sitting.  I was very sad when they moved locations, and then disappeared.

When I was invited to a “Kaiten” sushi tasting, I admit I had to look it up:

“The term Mobile Sushi Bar refers to a mobile version of sushi conveyor belt. Food is prepared on site, in plain view of your guests by a skillful sushi chef to deliver the best quality sushi. Simply enough, you can either sit down or stand in front of the conveyor belt while different plates of sushi are whirled round and round. Take off a plate, eat the sushi, take another plate you like, and eat the sushi. You will never have to wait in line as the dishes taken are quickly replaced by new ones.

The mobile bar extends up to 16.5ft and can be installed quickly and conveniently without a large installation team congesting your premises. Rather a straightforward installation steps allow us to travel virtually anywhere you require our presence.”

When you get to Japonais Bistro there are cozy booths lining the walls. It is a nicely decorated environment with rustic brick walls and wood accents. Our host, Isaac, was friendly and welcoming as was the rest of the staff.  The sushi bar was spinning, and the plates were beautifully presented.  I was happy to see a couple of professional cameras there as I know my point-and-shoot will not do these plates justice.

Jalapeno Yellowtail - torched yellowtail with thin sliced jalapeño, cilantro, tobiko, yuzu kosho sauce and ponzu sauce
Jalapeno Yellowtail – torched yellowtail with thin sliced jalapeño, cilantro, tobiko, yuzu kosho sauce and ponzu sauce

The thinly sliced jalapeno peppers were perfect with the Yellowtail, just the right amount of zing!  Ponzu is a favourite of mine, I love the way it brings out the flavours of the fish without being salty like the regular soy sauce.

Sushi Pizza - Salmon, Avocado etc on a light tempura crust.
Sushi Pizza – Salmon, Avocado etc on a light tempura crust.

I can’t seem to find this one on the menu, possibly a new item.  Delicious nonetheless.

Shrimp Wrap - Shrimp, tempura bits, fresh mango etc wrapped in a Soy Bean paper.
Shrimp Wrap – Shrimp, tempura bits, fresh mango etc wrapped in a Soy Bean paper.

This one was also delicious.  The tempura bits and the mango slivers both gave the whole experience a beautiful taste and texture.  This was another item that was recommended but I could not find on the online menu.

Wild Salmon Carpaccio - wild sockeye salmon, red onion, arugula with wasabi cream sauce and citrus soy sprinkled with roasted garlic.
Wild Salmon Carpaccio – wild sockeye salmon, red onion, arugula with wasabi cream sauce and citrus soy sprinkled with roasted garlic.

Again, delightful!  All of the flavours blend well together.  The salmon was fresh and firm.  The ponzu and wasabi really brought out the flavour of the salmon.

Sushi Tortilla - Salmon and tuna on a crispy rice tortilla with avacado, red onion, tomato, cilantro, jalapeno and arugula.
Sushi Tortilla – Salmon and tuna on a crispy rice tortilla with avacado, red onion, tomato, cilantro, jalapeno and arugula.

This was another that Isaac recommended when he was describing the options.  Packed with flavour per square inch with fresh ingredients making all the difference!  A nice blend of salmon and tuna.

Matcha Creme Brulee
Matcha Creme Brulee

This is my new favourite dessert!  The caramelized sugar crust was perfect.  The matcha custard was smooth and not at all grainy.  Perfectly sweetened.

Cheese Tofu - Mascarpone cheese, organic silken tofu, honey strawberries and toasted almond
Cheese Tofu – Mascarpone cheese, organic silken tofu, honey strawberries and toasted almond

Last, but certainly not least, the Cheese Tofu.  The texture is smooth… literally silk on the tongue. Pairs well with the fresh strawberries. This one would be nice with mango as well.

Needless to say from my tasting experience, I have a new place to go for Japanese Tapas.  They have a lot of my favourites on the menu and they are easily accessible located in Downtown Edmonton with free parking in front.  They also have a patio if that is how you prefer to drink your Sake!

If you would like to have Kaiten at a private function, Japonais Bistro will happily discuss it with you and make your experience tailored just for you and your guests.  Please give Kaiten Sushi’s website a look for more information.
